RDF: Die Die Die!

I think it's time to kill off the RDF feed of this weblog.

For those of you not following at home, there are a multitude of format choices for the RSS syndication format. This is not a good thing. This is mostly the result of a number of people acting badly.

When this blog started, I published 0.91 and 1.0 feeds. Last December, I dropped the 0.91 feed and upgraded it to 2.0. I think now it's time to drop the 1.0 feed (also called "RDF") and consolidate everything to a single 2.0 feed. This may help reduce confusion and hassle created by multiple feeds. Now that 2.0 is widely supported, I think it's the right choice. It offers much of the flexibility of version 1.0 without demanding all of the complexity.

There is another reason for simplifying the feed choices. There is yet another new syndication format on the horizon. I do not want to end up in a situation where I am supporting three feeds.

My RSS 2.0 feed is available at http://www.unicom.com/chrome/index.xml. Soon, I will replace the index.rdf file with a static document that points to this article. I hope folks who were using the RDF feed will switch.

Fit, Tan and Rested

IJTLCSH has stolen off for a brief, unannounced vacation. We are now back, nursing our hangover and trying to get that quickie Vegas wedding annulled. Content soon to follow.

RSS Changes

I've made a number of changes to the RSS feeds at this site. I've upgrade the 0.91 feed to a version 2.0 feed. That feed is now preferred to the version 1.0 feed. Both the sidebar XML button and the header <LINK> tag point there.

Both feeds are running tweaked versions of the Mark Pilgrim and Sam Ruby templates. I tweaked the 2.0 template by changing <guid> from funky references to permalinks, adding <dc:creator> information, and dropping <content> full entries. I can't do full content because a lot of my blog entries have relative URLs. Even if I fixed that, I've got some qualms about using RSS for blog reading (as opposed to blog update notifies).

I'm considering eliminating the 1.0 feed completely at some future time. Feedback on that or other issues concerning my RSS are welcome.

Fair and Balanced: A Note to my Readers

Thank you for visiting my humble weblog. I know there are something like 50 or 60 other blogs on the Interweb you could be reading instead of mine. I am grateful that you've decided to pass over the A-list bloggers, and reach way down to the D-list to find my blog.

To bring you a more optimal user experience, I am implementing a new site policy. From here on forward, this site will present a fair and balanced weblog.

Really, it's going to be the same old crap we've always done, but now we're gonna slap a fair and balanced label over it. We hope the change makes your visits here even more enjoyable.

Creative Commons License May Create Dangerous Liability

Link: An issue people may not be aware of with the Creative Commons licenses.

The writings of this weblog used to be provided under a Creative Commons License. Effective immediately, and with large amounts of disgust and anger, I have terminated that.

The intent of adopting that license was to allow people to copy and use any information I publish on my weblog. The actual effect, however, is that I ended up making representations and warranties that create significant legal liability on my part.

I am quite perturbed by this. It is completely my fault: I failed to do an adequate review of the legal document before adopting it. I trusted the Creative Commons folks to not get me into trouble. That's why I'm feeling somewhat hoodwinked about the whole ordeal.

So, at least for the time being, I've replaced the CC license with, "All rights reserved." Contact me if you want permission to copy.

Happy Anniversary

Six months ago I couldn't even spell blogger. Now I is one.

In Your Face

I thought it was time to create a Food and Drink and Coffee category, so I now have. It's called "In Your Face." I recently blogged a restaurant review. Now, maybe I'll do some more.
