Sunrise Tacos and Subs

That's when I looked up and saw the big grand opening banner flying above Sunrise Tacos and Subs. I did a quick u-turn at the light and checked it out.

This could be a nice addition to the neighborhood. The sub listing turns out to be quite slim (no roast beef, for instance), but they do offer a good number of choices--mostly Tex-Mex.

I decided to get the chicken fajita plate ($4.95) instead of a sandwich. Some of the restaurants on South First use some very scary chicken parts for what they call fajitas. The manager confirmed it was all marinated breast meat.

They turned out pretty good. The chicken was grilled with green pepper, onion, and green onion. The portion was generous. It was served with slices of avocado and a grilled jalapeño--a nice touch. The plate included rice (fair), beans (good), the usual so-called salad (some shredded lettuce and chopped tomato), and a couple of tortillas. It could have used some salsa or sour cream; next time I'll ask.

I noticed a couple of interesting things on the menu. They serve breakfast all day. They also do a cheesesteak.

My first visit was good enough to make me want a second. When I do, I'll post a followup note. They are at 2911B South First, a few blocks north of Ben White (the old Milano Pizza joint). Their hours are 7 a.m. through 5 p.m., closed Sunday.
