4,836 Spare Hours in Austin

Our favorite choice, with four mentions, was Barton Springs. As Jenny explained, "I could quite happily spend four hours at Deep Eddy or Barton Springs pools, interspersing dips in the naturally cold water with reading or sleeping under the tall shady cottonwood or pecan trees."

Next favorite, with three mentions, was Austin's own independent bookstore (and ground zero for weirdness), Bookpeople. Timbrat noted, "I'd then find my way over to Book People for a little browsing and people-watching (which is always good in Austin)."

Two people suggested the Botanical Garden at Zilker Park. Jonl said the Botanical Garden is "a favorite stomping ground for all my years in Austin."

Places also mentioned by at least two people include: Alamo Drafthouse, Barton Creek Greenbelt, Capital of Texas Highway/Loop 360, and Mount Bonnell.

Other places mentioned include: Amy's Ice Cream, Barnes & Noble, Blanton Museum of Art, Borders, Bouldin Creek Coffee House, Cathedral of Junk, Central Market, Continental Club, Crocodile Rocks, Deep Eddy, Dirty's, Eclectic, El Mercardo, Elisabet Ney Museum, Flight Path, Green Mesquite, Half-Price Books, Hyde Park Bar & Grill, Hula Hut, LBJ Library, Lake Travis, Mirabelle, Mojo's, Mozart's, Natural Gardener, Pacha, Ransom Center, Ruta Maya, Sandy's, Saxon Pub, South 1st St., State Capitol, Texas Chili Parlor, Thai Passion, Town Lake, Umlauf Sculpture Garden, Waterloo Records, Whole Foods, and Zilker Park.

Only one mention for Amy's Ice Cream? What is wrong with you people?

Oh, and bringing up the rear, our sentimental favorite, the Whip In.

Most of us found exciting and interesting places to visit around town. Others preferred to stay at home.

Prentiss contemplated his four hours and decided "I'd get started with my spring gardening." Adina thought, "the front beds need a row of annuals to replace the begonias."

David chose to use his time to molest chickens.
