- 1. What is an icon?
- An image that represents something such as a task or file.
- 2. Name three places you may find shortcuts to common tasks.
- Desktop (icons), quicklaunch toolbar (buttons), start menu (listings).
- 3. What is the Control Panel used for?
- Access controls to adjust the properties of your computer.
- 4. What can you safely do in the Control Panel?
- It is safe to look at (but not change) the controls.
- 5. What must you be careful about doing in the Control Panel?
- Making changes to the controls, because some changes will disrupt the computer.
Mouse Controls
- 6. Name two examples of a pointing device?
- Mouse, trackball.
- 7. What does the button configuration mouse property do? When might you want to change it?
- It controls which button you click to select. You may want to change it to switch from right-handed to left-handed use.
- 8. What does the double-click speed mouse property do? When might you want to change it?
- It controls how quickly you must double-click. You may want to change it if the computer is having difficulty registering your double-clicks.
- 9. What does the pointer speed mouse property do? When might you want to change it?
- It controls how fast the moves long distances across the desktop. When either the mouse is jumpy when you move it, or you have diffculty moving the mouse from edge-to-edge.
Video Display Controls
- 10. What is a pixel?
- A dot of light. (It stands for picture element.)
- 11. What does it mean when the display area is set to: 800 by 600?
- The display is set to show 800 pixels across (horizontal) and 600 pixels down (vertical).
- 12. Why might you want to increase the display area, say from 800x600 to 1024x768?
- To fit more onto the display.
- 13. Why might you want to decrease the display area, say from 1024x768 to 800x600?
- Things on the display are too small to read comfortably.
- 14. What are two fun ways you can personalize your video display?
- Set a background (or wallpaper). Add a screen saver.
